Historical Reconstruction of Medieval Guildford in the 14th Century, for ‘Guildford Castle VR’ in Unreal Engine 4
On this project I was responsible for creating the unique buildings and landmarks such as all the Churches, Friary, Bridge and Chapels. Also responsible for most of the Castle buildings and creating a variety of fence types that are used throughout the town
The project required a lot of research and was a research project in of itself, in order to faithfully recreate the buildings and landscape accurately. It was a challenge to build an authentic real world scale medieval town with the tools available optimized for VR. As a result, the buildings had to be fairly low poly and used a set of shared textures. So we didn’t have the luxury of uniquely texturing each building
I was responsible for doing the some of the smaller scale Georeferencing, and did the initial placement of roads and rivers, from maps and scan data. Aligning Google Maps Data with our photogrammetry and LiDAR scans with modern maps and Historical Maps from different periods, to help accurately build a coherent picture of Medieval Guildford, pinpointing buildings, roads and river placement
Used Houdini to bake down assets to create LODs and imposters for all the fences to keep things optimized. Special thanks goes to Historian Mary Alexander, for advising us on this project and offered invaluable incite that was crucial to the success and accuracy of the project
